Ashley’s housekeeper, Julia, led the detectives to the sitting room, claiming that Ashley would be with them momentarily. She offered to retrieve something for them to drink, but they thanked her and declined.

Dixon took the time to study the photos Ashley had on her mantle over the fireplace. She noted that, so far, she hadn’t seen a picture of Josie. Of course, it wasn’t always the case, she decided; however, Dixon assumed as close and as inseparable as Ashley was to Josie, it appeared odd that Josie didn’t seem to exist in the house. She picked up a photo of Ashley and studied the young girl in her pigtails.

“Thank you for waiting, Detectives.”

Dixon turned to see Ashley enter the room wearing a tennis skirt and white blouse.

“I had to finish changing. I’m meeting some friends in a little bit for a tennis match. I’m afraid I haven’t got much time.”

“Tennis sounds fun,” Dixon said. “Thank you for allowing us to speak with you again, Miss Griffin. We’ll try not to keep you.”

“Of course, Detective. Anything to help. How is your investigation coming along?”

“Not bad. We’ve managed to learn a lot.” Dixon returned the photo and linked her fingers together in front of her. “Including the identity of Josie’s mystery man.”

Ashley arched an eyebrow with curiosity. “Did you, now? Who was it?”

“Hmm…” Dixon muttered, shaking her head slowly. “Before we get to that, I have a question for you.”

Ashley stretched her lips into a smile. “Ask away.”

Dixon motioned with a tilt of her head at the photos on the mantle. “I’ve had enough time to see a good majority of the photos you have out. There are some of you dancing as a young lady, a few with you as a child, and some as an adult. You’ve also taken photos with a lot of people in your life. But I haven’t yet seen one of Josie. Not even in the background.”

“And you’re wondering why?”

“Yes.” Dixon crossed the room to stand in front of Ashley. “Wasn’t she your best friend?”

Ashley released a heavy breath. “It’s too much for me to handle. I had pictures of Josie for a while after her death, but to be honest, it really hurt me that she’s no longer here. It’s not because I don’t love her that I don’t have any of her pictures up. It’s because I do.”

Dixon noticed Montgomery’s questioning eyes, so she decided to drop the subject of the photos.

“How would you go about describing your dance instructor—Derek Schultz?” she asked.

“Mr. Schultz? He’s a nice guy,” Ashley said. “I really enjoyed his lessons. He’s very good at what he does.”

“Do you remember if he treated Josie any differently than you or his other students?”

“I don’t think so. Why?” As she spoke, her eyes widened. “Oh, goodness. Are you thinking Mr. Schultz and Josie were…involved?”

“We have his admission that they were,” Montgomery interjected.

“Really?” Ashley sounded genuinely surprised. “I had no idea. No wonder Josie never told me. It all makes sense now.”

“Why is that?” Dixon pressed.
